The Tax Service needs legal authorization in order to exchange tax information and file returns with federal and state agencies on your company's behalf. By completing a Tax Information Authorization (TIA Tax Information Authorization) or Power of Attorney (POA Power Of Attorney) form, we will have the necessary authorization to start depositing and filing your tax information.
Completing these forms does not authorize the Tax Service to provide legal representation on behalf of your company. It only authorizes us to file returns, make payments, and communicate with the agencies identified.
When your company began with the Tax Service, the necessary TIA and/or POA forms were completed as a part of your Start-Up Kit. If your company is entering into business in a new state, additional forms may need to be completed.
Complete the following steps to complete TIA forms.
1. Obtain the necessary Tax Information Authorization / Power of Attorney forms.
In order to reduce the amount of paperwork, the Tax Service has developed a single form (TIA) that is accepted by the Internal Revenue Service and numerous state agencies. In addition, the Tax Service's Standard State Power of Attorney form is accepted by over a dozen other states.
The remaining states require completion of their own POA form for tax types. Your Tax Service Representative will provide you with the necessary forms for the agencies you are adding.
2. Complete the provided forms.
Tax Information Authorization (TIA)
The Tax Information Authorization empowers the Tax Service to file your federal, state, and local tax returns, as well as make payments via the media required by the agency, and communicate directly with agencies on matters involving the returns and payments made by the Tax Service on your behalf.
This form is mandatory for all tax filing. Refer to the Reports and Forms chapter for a copy of the TIA form and instructions to complete the form.
Standard State Power of Attorney (POA)
This form grants the Tax Service authority to file state taxes on your behalf in those states that require a power of attorney with original signature, rather than a copy of the Tax Information Authorization.
Refer to the Reports and Forms chapter for a copy of the Standard State Power of Attorney form and instructions to complete the form.
3. Return the forms to your Tax Service Representative.
The Tax Service will submit the forms to the appropriate agencies for you. This will allow us to start making deposits and filing returns on your behalf.
